Do you know that you can change your life for better, by changing your thoughts? After my bypass surgery, my life was in a mess, emotionally, mentally, and physically. I felt as if my life was meaningless and that there was not much future for me: lonely, depressed, hopeless, weary and worry every living moment.
Each day, I spent time walking around like a zombie at home, or staring outside my window, angry with myself.
Believe it or not, it was one short quote and an accompanied article which I came across from an old magazine, that changed my life for the better that day. That quote was my wake-up call. It shook me up from walloping in self-pity and change my thought.
The profound words change from the quote and article my way of seeing life. They reminded me to let go of the painful past. Instead, I could live the life I’d always dreamed of.
Then it dawned on me that I was wasting my time, wishing for something which was over and done with. I was burying myself with regrets and self-pity. And all those harmful thoughts had been playing over and over in my head like old spoiled record. I was angry and kept fighting with my past thoughts, thinking I would win and be happy again. Then I realized those angry thoughts were always there controlling me, rather than I was in control of my thinking. That moment I decided to take back my own thought; started making own life decision.
The article also though me that I would definitely lose if I fight with reality. I was told to leave the past behind and move on, as life moves on regardless what happens.
From that day onwards, gradually I let go my old past and self pity, and move on. And I also learned that every one has to decide to do things for themselves. I started off slowly, taking small steps each day at a time. When I felt better, it somehow motivated me to move on further down the sunny side of life, so to speak. Those baby steps were the beginning of my change.
I was too preoccupied with the things that happened that I forget the things that are going on now. The problem is we are too engrossed with the so-called bad stuff of life that we overlook the many great and beautiful things in life right in front of our face.
Then, I realized what I have read or heard about positive thinking, attitude, mindset or the power of our thought are indeed true. All those motivation stuff I knew before, I used to treat them as some childish, silly mumbo-jumbo. For me then, I thought they were just well-written words merely to preach or tell stories for reading pleasure.
Now I open myself up to the endless possibilities of living a good life. The choice is all up to me. I call the shot and I am now shooting for the moon. As they say, if I miss the moon, it will land among the stars, right?
Today, I have accepted both the good and bad in life. I don't aim for perfection, but I appreciate whatever I have with me today. Of course things in life are always uncertain and we have to live with them.
The difference between what I was and what I am today is that in the old days, I was stuck dwelling on my past and wasting my time. Today I am moving forward with my life filled enthusiasm and passion.
Believe me, you can change your life for better by changing your thoughts. Stop wasting your life on the past, enjoy the present moment. As Robert Frost said: "In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on."
